MECHANICAL HAMMER - DEVELOPMENT

Apart from adding extra hammer units there are other ways to alter or modify your model. The illustration on the left is the same model except that the bent paper stick has ben replaced with a more substantial wooden hammer - and if you look closely you will see drawing pins pushed into the wood to make a clear tap-tap sound.

You can arrange for a hammer to be operated more than once for each turn of the crank. You will need to change the trip. On the right you will see 3 variations. A double [2], a triple [3] and a quadrupal [4] action. These have been made using short lengths of wooden lolly stick

You may already have discovered that you can't turn the handle backwards. If you try too hard it will break the machine.
Now if you could make a trip that was hinged in the middle maybe you could solve that problem. Give it a try!

There is no reason why you shouldn't design and make a trip hammer entirely from wood like the one shown here, then you could sand and varnish it. A wooden one looks good and will last forever - well nearly.
Lots of holes to drill though.

Could you make a dragon or dinosaur with a rearing head and neck?
